THE 40th ANNUAL O.HENRY PUN-OFF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
SATURDAY MAY 13, 2017 – ORDER OF EVENTS
11 AM- Noon – REGISTRATION OF CONTESTANTS: Even pre-registered contestants must check in at the registration table to receive their packets and number assignments. At 11:45 AM unclaimed contestant slots may be given to those registered on the stand-by waiting list.
11 AM – Noon – LIVE MUSIC: From the band Shinyribs will entertain audience early arrivals with “it’s hip shaking, belly laughing, soul-singing, song-slinging, down-home house party.” Bring a blanket and lawn chairs for the close spots on the grass. This year we again have seating under a 80′ x 40′ tent just in case of rain (Oh No!) Listen to their music until the Punniest of Show starts around Noon. Visit our book sale and “Once-a-Pun A Time” exhibit
11 AM – 4 PM – JEST FOR A WORDY CAUSE: The Brush Square Museums Foundation, formerly Friends of the O. Henry and Dickinson Museums, raises money to support museum programs, exhibits, and artifact preservation. Book Sale: We have assembled a super collection of previously owned books and excellent condition titles at low, bargain prices. The book sale is in the O. Henry Museum’s front yard, so take a break in the pun action to check it out. Auction: Visit out our silent auction table in the Museum’s front yard that includes coupons for popular entertainment, restaurants, and hotel rooms. One of a kind items will also be auctioned off during breaks from the stage. Membership: Consider joining our nonprofit as a member for $25 to receive invitations/news during the year to special Brush Square Museums events. Payment is only by cash or check. An ATM machine is located at the Hilton Austin next door. We Kneed Your Dough!
11 AM – 6 PM – FOOD & BEVERAGES: Cold drinks, snacks, and food may be purchased from three food trucks on site. You may bring food, but no alcohol (city park rules.) This year’s food vendors included:

Noon – 2 PM? – PUNNIEST OF SHOW: A maximum of 32 contestants will compete to deliver their prepared “punny” material within a time limit of 90 seconds.
2 PM and breaks – LIVE AUCTION: Special AUSTINtatious items will be going to the highest bidder, sweet! Support Brush Square Museums Foundation. Don’t forget to buy museum souvenirs, books, past Pun-Off t-shirts, and collectible items like the new 40th Annual Pun-Off t-shirt!
2:30 PM – 6 PM – PUNSLINGERS: A maximum of 32 contestants may compete. Each pair of competitors will be given a topic. At the judge’s signal, each player in his turn will have 5 seconds to deliver, or begin delivering a pun. The opponent will then be given a signal and another 5 seconds to start a pun. This tug-o-war continues until one of the contestants fails to make a pun or is “tongue-tied” or accumulates a total of three non-qualifying “strike” attempts at a pun.
