FAQ: A Question of Timing

  • Q: Regarding the Punniest of Show event, does the 90 seconds have to be based on one subject (e.g. States of America) or can it be a mix of props and miscellaneous gags?

A: Our Punniest of Show competition really has few rules other than the time limit. Ninety seconds is the target time for your entire performance because at 120 seconds you’ll get the timekeeper’s drop dead gong and you will be disqualified. There might be a bit of wiggle room in the timing for audience reaction and mic problems, but you should rehearse your delivery to be about 90 seconds to be safe. Continue reading

Live music at the Pun-Off

The Greatest American Heroes (greatestamericanheroes.com) and the O. Henry Pun-Off represent all the weirdness Austin has to offer. While not as old as the Pun-Off, the Greatest American Heroes have been playing TV theme songs in Austin since 2001. If you think about it, 13 years (or 13 seasons) is longer than most TV shows last. No one has ever challenged their self-christened title of “Austin’s Favorite TV Theme Song Band.”

Is it better to be an early or late P.O.S. contestant?

Q: It seems to me, over the years of observing the Punniest of Show that the judges are “looser” with giving out higher scores as the contest goes on. In other words, the first 10 contestants rarely get top scores compared to the last 10 or so contestants, i.e. 22 to 32. What do you think is the best slot for a contestant?

A: It is often presumed that the early scores tend to be lower but I don’t think anyone has ever really done the math to prove this. (Here’s a project where we could probably use the services of a computer whiz.) Traditionally we’ve always joked about the early contestants being somewhat sacrificial “cannon fodder” but that’s because its scary to be first up. Continue reading
