Due to circumstances beyond the pale, the 38th Annual O.Henry Pun-Off World Championships will be once again held in Austin, Texas on Saturday, May 9, 2015 in Brush Square behind the O. Henry and Susanna Dickinson Museums at 409 E. 5th Street.
Who? Punsters United Nearly Yearly (P.U.N.Y.) hosts this irreverent assault on our anguished language annually that lures both veteran verbivores and naive neophytes on a passionate pilgrimage to meet their Mecca in Austin. Although most contestants hail from the central Texas area, many will fall from altered states.
Be A Part of Id: Spaces are open for 32 competitive word warriors in two different categories of competition. Many will be left out standing in their fields as they attempt to harvest this year’s bumper crop of corn. Up for grabs will be the title of Punniest of Show, a freestyle competition for players with prepared material allows 90 seconds for creative have-wits from every crook and nanny to stuff their struts. Later bushel come to shove as another corny crop of 32 contestants face off in Punslingers competition when competitors are paired up and pared down by a pun and wordplay shoot-out on a given topic within strict time limits.
Online registration for the competition at punoff.com was opened at Noon on April Fools Day, April 1, 2015.
Jest For A Wordy Cause: Although the crowd groans louder and larger each year admission is free. Live music will be furnished by Minor Mishap Marching Band from 11am – noon.
Punniest of Show begins at noon followed by Punslingers at about 3 pm until a twisted end about 5 pm. The Brush Square Museums Foundation sponsors a used book sale and auction at the event and food and drink will be available from food trucks. Proceeds and donations support educational and restoration projects of the O. Henry and Susanna Dickinson museums.
